Born and Raised on the Chontal Coast
I’m Joaquín “Joaco,” born in Santiago Astata on the Chontal coast of Oaxaca. Growing up in Playa La Colorada among local fishermen shaped my deep respect for the ocean and this land.
After studying away from home, I returned at 27 and discovered surfing. For over 15 years I’ve worked as a surf guide and tour leader across the Salina Cruz and Huatulco coastline, learning every point break, swell angle and condition.
Mexico Waves was created to involve local communities in tourism, generating opportunities while protecting our natural resources. When you surf with us, you directly support locals and experience Oaxaca beyond the crowds.
